Chautauqua Tent

This year, the National Park will feature a Chautauqua Tent!  The tent will be located across from the Birthplace Cottage, and will feature a variety of programs for all ages.

What is a Chautauqua Tent?

The Chautauqua Movement started in the 1870s as an experiment in “vacation” learning outside of school.  The idea was to use leisure time to improve ones mind, morals, and physical health.  Chautauqua began as Sunday school classes but quickly broadened to academic presentations, programs in music, art, and physical education, and even correspondence courses for adults who couldn’t afford to attend college.  Chautauqua tents soon began circling the United States to bring educational programs to adults in all parts of the country.

The tent at this year’s HHTD will feature programs in the spirit of the Chautauqua Movement.  There will be historical reenactments and educational programs.  Come see Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, and learn about raptors from the Iowa Raptor Project!  There will be events throughout the day on Saturday.
